Mogul

Mogul Programs

SSCV Mogul offers programs for skiers from introductory level to full-time, elite athletes competing on the FIS competition circuit. The Bumps & Jumps Saturday Program and the Bumps & Jumps Weekend Program introduce young skiers to all-mountain skills, aerial maneuvers and, of course, mogul skiing and competition. The best terrain on the mountain is covered in bumps, and SSCV Mogul teaches skiers to access it with confidence and ease. SSCV promotes a fun positive environment for young skiers to build mogul ski and jumping skills to become the best mogul skiers possible. Whether you’re looking to be able to recreationally rip the bumps, or have aspirations of representing your country at the most elite levels, we can help you reach your goals!

Coaching & Methodology

The SSCV Moguls program focuses on holistic human development. We emphasize nurturing the “whole athlete”—physically, mentally, and emotionally—by treating the mogul course as a classroom for life skills such as resilience, adaptability, and emotional regulation.

Overview
Core Pillars of the Philosophy

1. Holistic Growth (The Person First)

  • Resilience & Adaptability: Moguls are never identical. Coaching focuses on teaching athletes to “flow like water” over unpredictable terrain, building a mental capacity to bounce back from mistakes and defeats.
  • Goal Setting & Self-Direction: Athletes are empowered to define their own vision for the sport, fostering intrinsic motivation rather than relying solely on external rewards.
  • Mental Fortitude: Techniques for managing fear, pressure, and adrenaline are central. Athletes learn to move from a state of fear to a state of flow and trust in their preparation.

2. Athletic Development (Fundamental Movement)

  • Long-Term Capacity Building: The focus is on establishing a broad foundation of athletic competence, including strength, speed, and spatial awareness, rather than just technical drills.
  • Progression-Based Learning: Training involves a structured, step-by-step approach—beginning with foundational skiing, moving to technical mogul precision, and integrating acrobatics (water ramps/trampolines) only when safe and appropriate.
  • Physical Conditioning: A “backbone” of year-round physical conditioning is essential for injury prevention and performance.
Core Pillars of the Philosophy

3. Technical Mastery & Functional Movement

  • External Cueing: Moving away from rigid technical instruction, coaches use external cues (e.g., “extend to the sky” rather than “extend your knees”) to elicit more natural, athletic, and effective movements.
  • The “Quiet Upper Body”: Training focuses on developing a stable, forward-weighted upper body that remains calm while the legs absorb the terrain, promoting better balance and control.
  • Active Absorption: Emphasizing the feeling of legs pulling up into the body, rather than dropping the torso down, creating smoother, faster, and more efficient, energy-saving runs.

4. The Culture of “The Journey”

  • Love for the Sport: The primary goal is to foster a lifelong passion for skiing, ensuring the athlete enjoys the process of improvement rather than just the destination.
  • Community and Collaboration: Cultivating a supportive environment where athletes, coaches, and parents work together toward a common vision.

On-Snow:

SSCV has amazing semi-private terrain in Golden Peak. We build and maintain two mogul courses, one for younger RQS/Devo focused athletes, and one that is a fully FIS specification elite moguls course. In addition to our courses, Vail mountain offers some of the best natural moguls in the world, perfect for developing mogul skills that will last a lifetime.

In the off-season, we search out the best training opportunities, planning trips to Mt. Hood, and the southern hemisphere seasonally.

Off-Snow:

Gyms:

Our athletes have access to 2 elite level gyms, both located with maximal convenience. At the SSCV Clubhouse, we have a full weight room, complete with olympic platforms, as well as a spin and movement studio. The second facility, the Minturn Fitness Center is located at Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy, and has the best equipment available for physical training.

Trampolines:

Also as VSSA are two olympic fly beds, a foam pit, and a super-tramp. We train all of our groups regularly on the trampolines.

In addition to gyms and trampolines, we utilize Maloit Park and the VSSA gymnasium for sport-specific physical training, as well as cross-training and team building sport days. We pride ourselves in offering the highest quality physical training, and have a very knowledgeable coaching staff when it comes to strength and conditioning training.

Part-Time Programs

Ski & Snowboard Club Vail offers an array of part-time programs for athletes at a variety of levels. Part-time programs take place between one and three days per week, mostly on the weekends. These programs are designed to develop skills in aspiring athletes across all snowsport disciplines, as well as cycling, and hopefully prepare them for advancement into a full-time program offering.

Full-Time Programs

For those athletes with the athletic skill and commitment to take their training to a higher level, we offer full-time programming. Our full-time programs provide athletes the opportunity to further strengthen their physical and mental abilities through excellent coaching, increased time on snow, and the support of a competitive peer group.

Full-Time Admissions Process

The full-time admissions process is designed to provide prospective full-time athletes and their families the opportunity to learn about all aspects of being a full-time athlete at SSCV. It is also designed to enable SSCV to learn more about the applicant and determine the best fit for all involved.
